Primary Class Resources

The F1 in Schools Primary Class is a fantastic program to introduce elementary aged students to the world of STEM and Formula 1. More information on the program itself can be found on the Primary STEM Project page. Teaching resources, including lesson plans, are linked below. For paper car kits, please visit our store.

About the Project

The Primary STEM Project encourages students to explore all areas of the curriculum while designing, making, testing, and racing a miniature F1 car powered by compressed air. Either individually, or in groups of 3 or 4, students design, make, and race a miniature racing car. Using a pre-cut net to form the chassis of the car, students then use their understanding of the science of speed to design an efficient bodyshell.  After testing and modifying their designs, cars are finally raced down a 12m track powered by compressed air, in an exciting race, engaging the whole school.

The project revolves around teamwork; recognizing both personal strengths and those in others. Using the worksheets included the project can be extended to include:

  • Design development

  • Promotion and presentation skills

  • Marketing and merchandise

  • Verbal presentation and communication skills

  • Team identity, color schemes, logos & uniform

There is also the opportunity to look at Formula 1 in a wider sense and explore geography, fitness, mental health, and wellbeing, creative and persuasive writing, history, art and design, amongst other subjects. The project is broken down into six units of work including learning outcomes and teaching notes, followed by a series of work and information sheets to support learning with suggested extension work.
These lessons can be further extended using the online bank of resources that include web links, videos, and PowerPoints, as well as additional worksheets and information sheets enabling teachers to further expand the breadth of learning or reinforce previous learning.
